In case you missed last night’s report on ABC’s Nightline, the video above provides a rare glimpse into Foxconn plants in Shenzhen and Chengdu, China, that create various Apple products, including the iPad.

As Nightline anchor Bill Weir told Mashable on Tuesday, the full 17-minute report (the above is a teaser from Good Morning America) is short on outright horror stories, but outlines the soul-crushing nature of the work. Apple invited ABC News to the plant following multiple reports about suicides and horrific conditions at the plants. Consumer and labor advocacy groups have also called on Apple to improve factory conditions. Despite Apple’s secretive nature, Weir was promised unfettered access and is satisfied that what he saw was not contrived.

Weir found workers who complained about jobs that pay so low that workers can’t afford to live with their families. There are also lingering shots of suicide nets underneath the windows at workers’ quarters and an interview with a woman who carves the Apple logo into the back of iPads all day but had never seen a finished version of the product.

If you’re surprised that that logo work is done by hand, you’re not alone. Weir said that he didn’t expect that to be the case, either. “The lines go on forever,” he says. “The conveyor belt never stops.”

Weir, who reported in China seven years ago, was also surprised that the workers were so upfront about their grievances. “No one hesitated to complain about food or dormitories or lack of overtime,” he said. “In many cases, almost to a person, they complained about low pay.” That last point is notable because Foxconn is now dealing with something it never had to before: worker retention. These factories, Weir said, know they have to maintain a level of consistency, and that they now have to treat workers well enough that they will not seek opportunities elsewhere. Foxconn recently implemented a number of significant pay raises.
